Sway Fencing Club 2008/9

Sway Fencing Club 2008/9

Founded in 1989 by coach Roy Stocks, Sway fencing club has members from around the locality, from Southampton to Bournemouth. We have regular visitors from Hampshire section and occasionally from further out: Cornwall, Jersey, Denmark and Australia.

The club counts amongst its’ membership wheelchair fencers from the British Paralympic team.

Fencing is no longer an elitist sport; none of the regular members drives a Bentley or went to public school!

How to explain the enduring appeal of the sport?

For those people who do not like to be in a team where they have to rely on other people to play their part to have some success, the antidote is fencing. With fencing you are on your own and you achieve what you want to achieve.

The sport takes mental agility and a quick wit. You have to be able to fool your opponent into thinking you are about to make a different move from the one you are going to make.

Who are our members

Our members come from a broad range of occupations – everything from engineers, printers, teachers, ferrymen, carpenters, artists; in fact, from life coach to solicitor, student to software developer, we’ve had the broadest selection of backgrounds at Sway as any special interest club you can think of!
